These Air Fryer chicken fajitas are super easy to make, bursting with flavor, and ready in no time! The chicken is juicy and packed with seasoning, while the peppers and onions stay crisp and flavorful. Perfect for a quick and delicious dinner on busy mid-week evenings.
These fajitas are low-carb, keto, paleo, low-fat, and Whole30 compliant, making them a great option for anyone looking for a healthy, flavorful meal.
The Ingredients
- Chicken strips, mixed bell peppers, and onions (red or yellow)
- Vegetable oil – You can use any oil you have on hand; I typically use canola oil, but vegetable oil, avocado oil, or sunflower oil also work well.
- Fajita seasoning – I always prefer making my own homemade fajita seasoning mix. It tastes far better than the store-bought versions and is both healthier and more cost-effective.
How to Make Chicken Fajitas in the Air Fryer
- Preheat your Air Fryer to 390°F (200°C).
- Slice the vegetables (don’t slice them too thin, or they might burn) and cut the chicken into strips (refer to the picture below).
- Coat the chicken and vegetables with oil and fajita seasoning. Be generous with the seasoning to ensure everything is evenly coated.
- Place the seasoned chicken and veggies into the Air Fryer basket.
- Air fry at 390°F (200°C) for 15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. The cooking time may vary depending on the thickness of your chicken strips and your Air Fryer model, so check the doneness and add a few extra minutes if needed.
Tip: Avoid overcrowding the Air Fryer basket. If you layer the chicken and veggies too much, they’ll steam rather than char, which affects the texture and flavor.
How to Know if Chicken Is Cooked
To check if the chicken is fully cooked, you can use a fork and knife to cut through a small piece of chicken and check the center. The most reliable way to confirm the chicken is cooked is by using a kitchen thermometer. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the chicken; it should read 165°F (75°C) for it to be safe to eat. If it hasn’t reached that temperature, cook it for an additional 2-3 minutes and check again.
Homemade Fajita Seasoning
I prefer making my own fajita seasoning at home because it’s healthier, cheaper, and free from unnecessary additives found in store-bought versions. When you check the ingredient list on a pre-made seasoning packet, you’ll often find chemicals you can’t even pronounce. Why not create your own blend with the spices you already have in your kitchen?
You can find my homemade fajita seasoning recipe here. I use this mix not just for fajitas, but also for tacos and various chicken dishes. I store the seasoning in a jar, so it’s always ready to go when I need it. This helps save time and money, especially on busy weeknights when I need a quick and easy meal.
How to Serve Air Fryer Chicken Fajitas
You can enjoy these fajitas as chicken fajita bowls for a low-carb or keto-friendly meal, or wrap them in tortilla bread. Wheat or corn tortillas work well, but if you’re gluten-sensitive, you can use gluten-free tortillas instead.
Top with your favorite additions, such as guacamole, pico de gallo, lime crema, pineapple salsa, fresh cilantro, or lime wedges. These toppings enhance the flavors and give your fajitas an extra burst of freshness.
